80's brick fireplace?

how can an 80's brick fireplace be updated? its the whole shebang: Fablon covered mantle, two side bits, one of which is for the tv and the other for a lamp. I have started by dmolishing the 2 side brick "areas" and just left the surround, how do i update it from here? cant demolish, just new wallpaper!
