Wishing well in a wedding?

We had a wishing well at our wedding. But traditionally for our family it does not imply needing to give a monetary gift, it is for "well wishes" or Cards of congradulations. If our guest had given us money that was their doing, and not our asking, and we greatly appreciated it. I think it is impolite to ask for money in that matter.
