Is it possible for animals to understand humans?

I think they do, when I had my dog, whenever I was sad he'd come and lay down beside me or rest his head on my legs, when I was happy he'd pounce at the door wanting me to go outside with him, when I was scared he'd just stay by my side. So yeah I think they can.
